ACCIDENTS & INCIDENTS POLICY

Policy

It is a legal requirement that all accidents and incidents, however minor, are recorded in an accident book or report and for these records to be kept form a minimum of 3 years.  

At The Care Worker Agency field staff can fill in an accident and incident form on the One Touch platform and this is automatically sent over to the generic email for all management personnel to see and act upon and make contact with them. Staff are also encouraged to phone the office on 01704 545544 or the on-call phone on 07503648680 to talk access support and help regarding any accidents and incidents, and we will support them to complete the accident form if they have not done so already.

All accidents are monitored on a monthly basis and a monthly accident analysis is completed to identify any patterns or issues of wider concern. While completing this analysis we also consider previous months incidents to see if there are any patterns emerging that need addressing.

Serious accidents and incidents should be reported to the Health & Safety Executive, Local Authority, Environmental Health, Local Police Service and our regulators the CQC.

Incidents that need further reporting to other relevant bodies include:

  • An accident when someone is seriously hurt
  • Dangerous occurrence
  • Accidents were an employee is away from work for more than three consecutive days
  • Certain work related diseases

Major injury accidents/conditions are:

  • Fracture of the skull, sone, pelvis,, arm or leg
  • Amputation of hand/foot/finger/toe
  • Any penetration, burn or contamination of the eye
  • Loss of consciousness resulting from lack of oxygen or from impact
  • Any poisoning or contamination
  • Any injury which results in admission to hospital

Dangerous occurrences include:

  • Fire caused by electrical malfunction
  • Any collapse of a building or scaffolding over 3 meters high
  • Uncontrolled release of any poisonous solids, liquids or gasses
  • Bursting, explosion or collapse of a pipeline
  • Failure of any breathing or other apparatus malfunction

The Managing Director of The Care Worker Agency is the nominated individual and will be responsible for any investigation and follow up safety action following the accident/incident or dangerous occurrence.

Procedure

It is a requirement of all staff to report any accidents, incidents, events or near misses to their line manager in a timely and efficient manner.

Incidents of a serious nature must be reported immediately to the Care Manager or the most senior person on shift, either in person, over the telephone or via the One Touch app. Your line manager will support you with what to do next.

Emergency help and support must be requested via the Emergency Services by dialing 999 and staff must follow the instructions they are given by the emergency services.
